On the morning of June 24, the National Assembly of Vietnam officially passed an amended Law on Vietnamese Nationality, making it easier for foreigners to acquire or regain Vietnamese citizenship.
Foreigners and stateless individuals can now apply for Vietnamese citizenship if they have full legal capacity.
For minors applying through a parent or those with Vietnamese parents, this requirement is waived.

To be granted citizenship, applicants must:
✅ Obey Vietnam’s Constitution and laws,
✅ Respect its culture and customs,
✅ Speak Vietnamese sufficiently to integrate,
✅ Reside in Vietnam for at least 5 years, and
✅ Be financially self-sufficient.

However, these requirements (language, residency, financial) can be waived if the applicant:
Has a Vietnamese spouse, child, parent, or grandparent,
Has made significant contributions to the country, or
Brings benefits to the State.
New citizens may keep their original name, adopt a Vietnamese name, or combine both if holding dual citizenship.
Their full name will be officially recorded in the naturalization decision.

Only 4 specific groups are required to have sole Vietnamese citizenship and reside permanently in the country:
◉ People holding term-based positions in the Party, Government, or mass organizations;
◉ Personnel in the cryptographic sector;
◉ Armed forces members;
◉ Public officials and civil servants (unless exempted due to national interest or strategic value).
The Government will later provide detailed regulations on these exceptional cases.
