  • Wrong forms: Incorrectly filling out forms or using outdated forms.

How is the Duration of a Temporary Residence Card Determined?

The duration of a Temporary Residence Card for foreigners living and working in Vietnam depends on:

  • The duration of the Work Permit.
  • The expiration date of the passport.
CasesTemporary Residence Card DurationExample
Passport expires before Work PermitThe expiration date of the temporary residence card is 30 days before the passport expiration date.Work permit valid from 20/10/2023 to 19/10/2025Passport expiration date: 10/10/2024
=> In this case, the maximum duration of the temporary residence card will match 30 days before the passport expiration date, i.e., 10/09/2024.
Work Permit expires before Passport, and expires more than 30 days earlierThe expiration date of the temporary residence card will match the expiration date of the work permit.Work permit valid from 20/10/2023 to 19/10/2025Passport expiration date: 10/05/2029
=> In this case, since the work permit expires earlier, the temporary residence card will expire on the same date as the work permit, i.e., 19/10/2025.
Passport valid for 13 months or lessA temporary residence card cannot be issued.

Alternative Solution:The applicant cannot apply for a temporary residence card but can instead apply for a Multiple Entry Visa.
Work permit valid from 20/10/2023 to 19/10/2025Passport expiration date: 10/03/2025=> In this case, if the application for the temporary residence card is made on 20/02/2025, the passport is valid for less than 13 months, meaning no temporary residence card can be granted.
